CHAPTER FOUR

Andrew’s hand kept stroking my hair while I clung to him, sobbing like a child into the shoulder pad of his soft tuxedo, standing in the shadow of a cement pillar in the parking garage under the Munich Opera.

“Shhh,” he soothed. “You’re too upset. When did you sleep last?”

“I…I don’t know.” I hiccupped. “These last four weeks…have been hell.”

He waited for me to calm down, and when I didn’t, he treated me like the kid I had turned into, and kept slowly stroking my hair.

“Phil, I need you to listen.” I felt him sigh. “I didn’t take your calls because I needed some time to myself to process what happened in London. It was wrong of me, and I’m sorry. But this isn’t easy for me either. I care for you. You know that.”

My body shook from a new wave of tears. I couldn’t take his pity.

His hand stopped stroking and moved to carefully caress the back of my head. He held my cheek firm to his shoulder and spoke quietly. “I shouldn’t have let you run from that party. When I finally came to my senses and ran after you, I found you’d already checked out.”

“I couldn’t stay.”

“Why?”

“You were never supposed to know how much I…” I felt embarrassed, and I couldn’t finish the sentence. “You know.”

“So it wasn’t a spur of the moment?” he asked tentatively. “It wasn’t me instead of someone else on that dance floor?”

I raised my head and moved so I could look into Andrew’s calm and beautiful face. My tears started to subside, but my eyes were probably red-rimmed. “No. Of course it wasn’t a spur of the moment.”

“You want me?”

“Yes.”

“Really want… me?”

Since I’d already ruined everything else between us, I might as well expose myself completely. “Yes, Drew. I’m that pathetic. It’s probably my curse to be attracted to you beyond all reason.”

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, waiting for him to push me away.

But he didn’t. For what felt like minutes we stood there, me in his arms.

“Drew?” I opened my eyes again, not really knowing what was going on.

He lifted his eyes to meet my gaze, making me think he’d been watching my mouth for all that time. “That kiss…I thought you knew? You must have known.” His voice came out rough.

My breath hitched from the aftermath of crying. “Known…what?”

“Why do you think I follow you around the world? Why do you think I’m happy only when I see you? When I get to be close to you, laugh with you?”

I had taken it for granted that Andrew traveled to twenty different cities every year to spend a week or just a day with me. It was the way it had always been, ever since we first became friends.

“Do you really believe we’re just friends?” he said as he gently stroked my temple with his thumb.

“I don’t understand—” I said, but was interrupted when Andrew’s hand suddenly grabbed for my chin, pulling me into a kiss.

I was so surprised, my eyes flew wide open.
